2008 Lincoln MKX 3.5L - Running Bad, Misfire

General Information:
This vehicle came in with a complain of the check engine light, no power, and not running good.
First Thoughts:
I really didn’t know what to think with this vehicle. I just plugged up the scanner to see what codes it had. As I plugged up the scanner, I cranked it up and could notice a dead skip in it. The car lacked power and just sounded rough.
Diagnostics:
In my opinion, this one was pretty easy. Not much going on with this one except for a misfire.
Expect it was on the number one cylinder…
Since the engine is turned, the number one cylinder on this car is on the opposite side of the front of the car.
So if you open the hood, you’ll notice three coils close to you. (Under the cover) But the one I was wanting to get to is on the opposite side. Basically under the intake.
The coils on that side are not hard to replace if you take the intake up. As I was looking at it, it may be possible to take the coils up without removing the intake, but it didn’t look like you could replace the spark plugs without taking the intake up.
Generally, what is recommended is to take the intake up and replace all the coils and spark plugs on that side if that is where the misfire is at. More than likely, those coils and spark plugs are not going to be the next misfire in the engine if they are new. If you just replace one coil and spark plug on that side, you run the risk of having to take the intake back off when another coil and or spark plug stops working on that side. Which is just a hassle, but some people like to just do one at a time.
The customer was given an explanation of what was going on and what we recommend, but they decided to go to another shop for a different price.
But it was ok, I didn’t spend too much time on the vehicle, so not much time was lost.
I didn’t even charge for diagnostics.
What do you think? Should I have charged the customer? Not much time was lost and I didn’t fall behind on any other work.
