Underrated Equipment #4 - Tool Storage

Tool storage (toolbox) is key for organization within your shop. Tools laying everywhere can easily become a pain for any mechanic working in the shop. Of course, tool storage can become very expense, very quick, but sometimes it is well worth the price for organization and peace of mind.

Each tool manufacture has their own line of toolboxes for different applications. Some toolboxes are more vertical for limited spaces around the shop and some are more horizontal to act like a table for the mechanic. Some have power stations built-in to the toolbox and some have additional attachments to boost storage for the ever growing tool storage needs.

Which route should you go for purchasing a toolbox? Well that depends on the application. Do you have limited space, with a large amount of tools? You should consider a more vertical toolbox rather than horizontal. Do you have tools that need a power supply to keep batteries charged? Look into a toolbox that comes with a power supply built into it.

Should you buy a Snap-on(or Matco) or Harbor Freight(or Craftsman)? Both have their advantages. Snap-on toolboxes can be very expensive, but, speaking from experience, they hold up every well for years. Harbor Freight toolboxes can be super inexpensive but might not hold up well for years to come.

As a professional mechanic that opens and closes toolboxes drawers about 100 times a day, I trust Snap-on(or Matco) toolboxes. But I’ll be honest with you, Harbor Freight(or Craftsman) toolboxes are in my personal shop at my house. They do not see as much use, but they are holding up. I’ve seen Harbor Freight(or Craftsman) toolboxes used in a shop setting before and they have not held up to the constant opening and closing that a professional shop requires. Of course, it also falls on the mechanic and if he or she takes care of the toolbox.

Consider your needs before purchasing a toolbox. Sometimes the one with the most bells and whistles is not the one for you. You don’t want to be stuck with a payment that will make you regret the purchase.
